Dejah Thoris and the White Apes of Mars Issue 1

Summary[]

On the way to an archeological dig at an ancient battle site at the 'face' of Mars, Dejah Thoris and her party are stranded. They take shelter in a dead, ancient city - infested with killer white apes. Hungry ones. The most harrowing horror story in the annals of Barsoom!

Full Summary[]

The story begins with Princess Dejah Thoris school her son Carthoris about the end of the Battle Zodanga, which was achieved by John Carter, his father. Carthoris who was initially skeptical of history lessons finds himself enjoying them. He asks about a specific battle in one of his books, the Battle of the Face of Barsoom, as their is very little detail. His mother tells him that she knows nothing about it only that it was a great and noble victor for the warriors of Helium. She reads a passage from the book, detailing it to be a confrontation with the Thark army, where the soldiers of Helium were outnumbered but after days of endurance finally managed to defeat the barbarians.

Carthoris is disappointed and finds it strange that the account of the battle is only one small passage. He wishes to know what happened as does Dejah. Together the two meet Kil Gor, the only surviving veteran from the battle. Despite their praise and request Kil Gor politely refuses to tell them of the events that transpired at the battle.

Leaving Kil Gor, Carthoris asks by his mother did not order the soldier to tell them of what he remembered. Dejah however tells her son that while she could have force Kil Gor with her authority, she stated that not using it displays greater strength. And believes that they should honor and respect Kil Gor's wishes.

Rather than drop the matter, Dejah decides to invite three of her noblewomen friends on an archaelogical expedition over tea.
