Issus was an ancient Black Martian who was worshipped by the Therns as the Goddess of Life Eternal, Daughter of the Lesser Moon, Mother of the Nearer Moon, and the Goddess of Death.

Through complicated means, Issus essentially controlled the entirety of Martian religion. Because of her status she was worshipped by the First Born and the Therns. She would eventually meet her end at the hands of her own followers, being literally torn apart by them.
John Carter (2012)[]
In John Carter (2012), Issus is the main goddess in the Martian religion. There was even a temple dedicated to her in Thark.
